August Scherneckau diaries [manuscript], 1862-1896.

Diaries of a native of Germany who served in the Union Army during the Civil War, came to Cross Hollows, Oregon from Nebraska in 1874, and operated a stage station near the town of Shaniko, Oregon, which was named for him. Diaires, 1862-1865, record Scherneckau's Civil War experiences, including sentry duty, transporting artillery through Missouri mud, foraging, camping, and writing and receiving letters. Diary of 1897-1898 records the Scherneckaus's trip to Europe, where they visited relatives and went sightseeing. Scherneckau's own typescripts are in German. Translations prepared by Carl Nitz are filed with the collection.
